Raspberry Pi $25 PC! Emacs Violates GPL? Google TV for $99, More Free Games!

Another great week in Linux news. (Ok, week and a half… it’s been busy here). Cheap PCs, GPL violations, nonfree software bundling, Google TV, and free games. How much better can it get? (probably quite a bit… but you know where I’m going with this)

Jordan, I am experiencing some troubles with the new kernel versions and my smcwusb-g wifi dongle. New kernels recognize it but it won’t work accordingly dropping signal and falling off every time.

I would like to ask your for any source of info that will let me comprehend how to compile an old kernel into a newer version of a distribution and if that will lead me to any trouble… or how to compile my driver into the kernel and tell the kernel to use only mine.

thanks in advance and greetings from Spain.

I’m totally into that libre open source thing, but I also use Flash occasionally, for the sake of compatibility. It doesn’t appear that things will continue to be this way for very long, though. Give it a decade and open standards will be super easy to embrace. XD

is this news or is it commercial tv? it was no news in this. i think news is about programmers releasing stuff and about the community. not selling games and telling about products all the time.

I can’t wait for the raspberry pi to be available on market, just because I want to see how it works and want a new toy! :D

Raspberry Pi. according to the official website it has 10/100 ethernet.
Maybe another use for such a mini-computer would be to build a custom firewall ?
Just a quick thought, i haven’t think it through very much to be honest.
a 25$ very customizable firewall would be nice..
Plus a homeserver as you have mentioned.

not sure if I make sense for using a Raspberry Pi as a firewall or if it is a good idea, but nice to see that such things are being made/created.

Anyway, thanks for the news update :)

It would certainly be nice if they ever decided to make a 2 Network Card version. With these specs it could easily handle Clear OS and run as a router, connected to a switch. Not to say that 25$ + switch, it would be way cheaper than a 10+ router.

Nice Video bud, actually pretty excited about the Raspberry Pi, sounds delcious- I mean useful. I work in IT and product development and can think of a few uses for one of these as a single purpose network appliance.

lol at emacs. being a vile and/or vim user and a fan of bsd(-style licensing), this is just another opportunity to laugh hard ad gnutards. :)

Hehe ;) That’s a good one for Ask TWIL. BSD vs GPL. What are the differences, why BSD, or why GPL?
BTW: I just use Nano XD

    • unluckyfool

      How are they “gnutards”?
Besides, the violation was when eight of so files were not distributed (they were auto-generated anyway), so its not really that severe.

May I say that your site looks like rubbish on IE 9. I tried to watch your site at my work, but all the text was overlapping each other and so.

Yup, IE9 is thoroughly broken when it comes to javascript. Hit the “Compatibility View” button in the address bar.
